Cable Fae Slouch Hat

So I was surfing Google and I kept seeing these really cute fairy looking hats with just a little cone on top. I thought it was cute but not really my style. I wanted to make something I would wear in public haha. Last year I made a bunch of stocking hats but they were really long. They looked cool but I didn't want to redo that. I wanted something that is cute and stylish. I decided to combine the two ideas and this is what I came up with. If you can't see the whole picture right click on it and select view picture.

This is a front view

Here is the tip

The tip slouching a little bit more. I like it better when it slouches a bit :)

If I want it to slouch a bit I wear it back off of my forehead. If I want it to be less slouchy I wear it over my forehead a bit so whatever mood I am in it works :)

What do you think?

Note for those of you who bought the pattern and want to know what the *Cable Cross* is: (Here is a video I found on how to do the cable cross *it isn't really called that I don't think* Cable Cross)

As always, you have the best hat patterns anywhere! I have several projects on the go but had to make this hat and now my son wants one too. I don't know if it has been tested but I changed the first row to 10 dc instead of sc (I've never fpdc into a sc before) and your missing the 3dc in between the stars in row ten. Luckily, by then you get pretty used to the pattern so I was able to figure it out. But I thought you may want to know.
I will try to post some pictures.
Oh and thanks for making your patterns free! It is so awesome of you!

ah thanks! I think it is 4dc that I am missing. I will put it in now thanks :)

This is really nice, I love the cables. Another one I'll have to try. I'm so impressed with all the amazing pieces you put out so often!

Hey April,

I'm new to crocheting and I was just wondering how you checked your gauge because using an H hook and worsted weight yarn my gauge is much smaller. Do you crochet very loose did you use bulky weight yarn?

Thanks for the help, I really love the pattern.

Hazel: I think it was a combination of me crocheting loosely and the yarn I used. I still don't know what kind of yarn it was. It was given to me as a gift and it didn't have a label.

april,
i just love the pictures of this hat and am so excited to make it! i am new to using crochet patterns, however, and i was wondering if when you put "*to*" in the pattern directions you are saying to repeat what is written between the first set of asterisks in that line?

AprilDraven said...

Dani: Yes, repeat what is in between the asterisk until the end of the round

just finished the hat with minor modifications, including some unintentional ones on the first few cable cross. My head's probably a bit bigger than yours, so the hat doesn't really slouch, which is fine with me because i'm going for the elf/pixie look. Thanks for posting the pattern; i had lots of "ohhhhh" moments whilst making the piece.

Philip Peter: Yay! I'm glad you got it to work for you. If you want it more slouchy try using a thicker yarn and a bigger hook. Just some advice ;)

Hi April,
I actually have this yarn. Got it on clearance at hobby lobby. It is Vanna's choice yarn, but I threw away the label. Hope that helps. Great pattern!

Thanks! I will check that out :)

Hi April!.. LOVE this look! I may give it a try sometime soon, as we are getting some TERRIBLE weather my way right now!.. Blustering wind chills well below zero! I am currently working on another hat at the moment, but would LOVE to try this one. I'll have to think what color I'd like it in, and we'll see what I can do! Enjoy your weekend, Happy New Year, and thanks for sharing your pattern! ~tina

April,

As always I love your patterns. I used alpaca yarn in brown. The hat is for my toddler son. I kept everything true to the pattern. Until I stopped increasing at 7 DC, it's 20 rounds and the last 3 are sc. (I was running out of yarn. Had only 2 oz to work with.)

I have never done a cable cross before and your diagram as well as the video helped me understand it just fine. Can't wait to post it on Raverly. As he looks adorable int it!

Thanks! Can't wait to make myself the purple cable slouch.

Yay! I'm glad you figured it out just fine :) I saw pics of the hat on Raverly. soooooooo cute :)

I love this hat pattern, but I'm having difficulty with the cables. What is the difference between doing the cable cross and just doing fpdc in the order of your diagram? I realized that I was doing something wrong when my cables weren't cables....they were just straight ridges or something!

Ava: Does this pic help more? http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c128/AprilDraven/Free%20Patterns/instructions.jpg

I tried to draw the difference out.

Yesssss thank you! I sat there staring at that diagram for ages and then I lightbulbed!

Awesome. I'm glad it clicked for you :)

Hi, I hope this isn't too much to ask but I'm A LOT of trouble understanding this pattern.
I know how to fpdc, and dc, and all that but, what I don't get is how to do rows such as row 4.
it kind of confused me and my yarn just bunched up in an area where i put all the fpdc's.
could you elaborate?

AprilDraven said...

kinarangel: Did you get the pattern copied before I took it down? For some reason this message got sent to my spam folder. (I hate it when yahoo does that) tell me if you didn't and I will give it to you for free. It sucks to be in the middle of a pattern and be waiting for a response and then have the pattern go away.

I was having fun with this pattern in the fall, but I had baby brains so I ran into some trouble. I had baby and since then lost the pattern.... AHHHH.

Now I hope to find a slouch hat pattern for my new babe for the upcoming fall.

Love the green yarn you chose!!!!
