Mario Mushroom Hat *Free Pattern*

so I was sitting in my chair crocheting while watching my husband play the Wii and I thought "I should make him a Mario Mushroom hat" I made him a 1up hat a couple years ago so I decided to make the red one this time :) When I was done he asked me why I made him the red one and not the green one. (Green is our favorite color) and I proudly stated "Because bigger is better!" LOL also it is the original Nintendo colors. Anyways, I figured I would post the pattern because Christmas is coming up. I don't know about most of you but I am really poor and make a lot of my Christmas gifts.

*****UPDATE 11-23-09*****
I made a tutorial on how to switch colors and use a chart
Here is the link

YAY! I love this so much! I'm hoping I have time to start one this week- what a great holiday gift! I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks so much for your fabulous patterns, I'll be linking to this as well. I think I have enough fun nerdy projects to put up a new Geek Craft Roundup in the next day or so. Those are my favorite!

I love your blog! Great patterns- it's wonderful to find such good ones for free. I'm like you...not much money here either and I make most gifts that we give(just finished an afghan, 2 hats and baby mary janes for a friend due to have a girl and then started another baby afghan today for my brothers best friend and his fiance. After that I have to buckle down and get Christmas gifts finished!). Keep up the good work!

This is awesome. I've never done this kind of crocheting before, but I'm going to try. I know several people who would love it.

Thank you for posting this pattern. I am an amateur and this was my first hat. I could NOT understand your pattern. So I figured I could find another basic hat pattern and add the mushroom. I stumbled across this pattern: http://www.spunfibrearts.com/site/spun_fibre_arts/assets/pdf/Crochet_Hat.pdf

I assume that pattern is what you meant, but I never would have gotten it from your pattern alone. Maybe it's the yarn I used, but the mushroom kept coming out puffy, so I just crocheted the entire hat in blue, then made a separate mushroom patch to sew on. It came out great and the finished project is here: http://images2d.snapfish.com/232323232%7Ffp53682%3Enu%3D3%3B52%3E94%3B%3E253%3EWSNRCG%3D3288468335344nu0mrj

Thanks again!

mabanero_pepper,
it is good you found a pattern that worked for you. No that is not the pattern I meant. This pattern is my own. I didn't take it from anyone. If the mushroom turned out puffy it is probably the yarn you were using or you were crocheting too tight or not tight enough. I'm glad you figured something out.

I have been crocheting for six years now & this is my 1st attempt @ using a diagram of this nature. Before now, I have shied away from anything like this, but I REALLY want to make this hat!!! I was wondering if u could clarify the mushroom pattern/diagram for me. Is it crocheted into the pattern of the hat or is it crocheted separately & then 'sewn' onto the hat? Please forgive my ignorance. I have a hubby, son, 2 brothers & 2 nephews who would go batty over these for Christmas. I make most of our gifts, as we are not independently wealthy either. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

AprilDraven said...

You crochet it into the hat. Here is a site that will explain how to switch colors. http://www.crochetnmore.com/chartcrochet.htm

With my pattern you will start at the bottom right and work left for each round. No going back and forth because a hat goes around and not back and forth. I hope this helps

April, sorry I did not mean to imply that you took someone else's pattern. I meant to ask if the pattern for the base of the hat was done in the same way. Now that I've done a couple of different hats, I can see that it is. As a complete n00b I didn't get it. It really is a great pattern. You are very creative and talented.

It's all good. That is one thing I hate about the internet. You can't tell emotions and what people mean.

This is absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for posting this! I have to start hunkering down and making christmas hats and I've always wanted to make one like this!

Question, though. Do you leave the yarn attached as you crochet the graph? I have no idea how that would look in the back, though, since I've never done it before!

alissa said...

thanks for the pattern! I didn't make it a mushroom hat... i couldn't find a good men's crocheted hat, so i used your pattern and did wide grey and medium width navy stripes. turned out awesome! what a great christmas gift!

Sara said...

Just like Shea, I am curious how you keep the dropped and picked up thread on the back side.

Also I used a I hook and followed the pattern to the T and my beanie was kinda small.

Any suggestion would really be appreciated, esp on the yarn on the back side.

AprilDraven said...

Sorry I didn't get an e-mail telling me I got new comments. Ok what I did with the yarn is when I got to the mushroom I added the colors I would need in that round and when I got to the end of the round I cut and tied all the colors except for the gray. When doing the colors I carried them all through the pattern but not through the whole hat. I hope that made sense. I am not so good at hiding tails so I didn't worry too much about the other side on this hat because it is on the inside and it doesn't show anyway. So the inside of the hat doesn't look that great LOL I may be obsessed with details but I don't worry about the stuff that doesn't show. I hope that helps.

Okay, this pattern has been driving me nuts, and my kids all want their own so I have a few questions for you. If you crochet the mushroom, why just the graph to show it, and no instructions on how to do it? It looks almost like you could cross stitch it. And when you switch colors, are you tying them together, or do you ch1 first? I've tried like 50 different ways to do this and am entirely frustrated now!

AprilDraven said...

Linn: I didn't post instructions on how to do it because I am not teaching people how to use a chart I posted a pattern on how to make the hat. Here is a link that might help you out. http://www.crochetnmore.com/chartcrochet.htm When you get to the mushroom on the chart start at the bottom of the graph and work from right to left then all the way around the hat until you get to the next round of the chart again. always go from right to left don't switch back and forth. You only go back and forth for squares this is a hat and it goes around. I hope this helps

Sara said...

Thanks for explaining April, my mushroom has turned out pretty good. I've made two of these hats and just wanted to state this hat is great but if you have a big head like I do, its best to work in a two more rounds of expanding.

Just wanted to say thanks again!

AprilDraven said...

Thanks :) You could also try using a bigger hook. Just another idea ;)I'm glad it all worked out.

Heres my newest hat, thanks again!

Justin: Awesome! I'm happy you figured it out. I'm sorry I forgot to answer the other part of your question from before *slaps head*(air head moment sorry) to make it bigger you could try a bigger hook or add a round after round 13 to *8 sc, 2 sc in next sc* rep from * to * around then start the pattern after that.

April, I made one hat from you pattern and I love it. I am trying to make another for my friend and for some reason now your chart is cutting off the left half of the mushroom. I have tried everything I can think of but I can't get it to show up. Is there any way you could maybe email me the chart? (since I am sure it is something I am doing wrong)

Love, love ,love your blog! Whipped up a few of these as Christmas presents, but when I returned to your blog to crochet another one, I encountered the same problem as Polly above. You used to be able to click on the graph & the whole image would pop up in another window/ page. Idk if it's something I'm doing wrong either...

I think your diagram is cut in half. Could you e-mail me the full thing? I'm at leannepayne@gmail.com
Either that, or just re post the entire picture. Thanks

click on the picture and it should show you the entire picture. If it doesn't then right click on the picture and select view picture.

Thanks for posting this! I used your basic pattern for this hat, but added a Jack Skellington face I designed instead of Mario. My 16 yr old actually wore it to school today!
It was the first hat like that I've made. Also want to say thanks for the great tutorials you've posted. They are really helpful.
I started a blog about crochet and the like, and made sure I gave you credit. :)

Great pattern April. I made this hat in one afternoon. I was trying to make it for my great nephews but it was too big. I going to try it again but stop increasing at row 9. Thanks for the pattern, keep up the good work.

AprilDraven said...

Thanks Everyone. Happy Holidays!

I made this hat for my great nephews. I stopped increasing at row 11. They loved it. Thanks again April.

I don't understand how the rounds are crochet. When I get to round 7 I am getting more than 48 stiches and I am even skipping sc. Example I am 4sc in next sc skip sc 2sc in next sc. I end up with 58 stiches. I just don't understand how to keep the correct stich count.

AprilDraven said...

Teresa:

Rnd 7: *4 sc, 2 sc in next sc* rep from * to * around (48)

This means 1 sc, 1 sc, 1 sc, 1 sc, then 2 stitches in the next stitch then repeat that pattern.

Don't put 4 stitches in 1 stitch. You will end up with Waaaaaaay too many stitches.

Unknown said...

Thanks that helps a lot.

Hey! I made this hat for my son (7) he absolutely loved it so much he went to bed wearing it. Thanks so much for sharing your talent. Also, I will be purchasing the fairy hat pattern. This is actually the hat he asked to make because it was just like the one Dil wears on the Rugrats (name may be wrong), lol. Thanks again.

AprilDraven said...

Thanks!

Oh cool! I haven't seen rugrats in years. I looked it up and you are right! Dil does wear a hat like that. Awesome!

Hi April,
i've been working on this hat for awhile and i run into issue after issue with the pattern... now i read that you weren't teaching how to crochet with a chart but have you ever thought of doing a post just about that... just a thought and also if you could give any insight on working with a chart it would be greatly appreciated... this is the first chart i've ever done... thanks so much... Nikki :)

AprilDraven said...

Nikki: There is a link to the tutorial right under the picture in this post.

Just used the mushroom chart to make a scarf for my great nephew. I posted a pic of it on Ravelry under your mushroom hat project. Thanks for the chart. I thought it was easy to use. So simple and can whip it up for a quick gift. Thanks for being generous with your talent and sharing this pattern for free.

I hope you still remember this since it's been a while. I am lost where it says rnd 13, sc 20 then start with the black on the chart. I thought we started with black per the instructions at the beginning. Then in what do you incorporate the mushroom? What row do I begin? Please email me. I want to make these for my grandkids. Thank you. Awesome hat ! Betguillen@hotmail.com
