I decided to make a video. I know a lot of people come to my blog and look at my hats and think that they are too complicated. They really aren't. (well most of them aren't) I have looked online and I haven't found any really good videos on how to crochet a hat (that doesn't mean there aren't any good ones out there, just that I didn't find any in my search that covered everything needed) so I decided to make my own. Most of the ones I found are filmed from the side or from the front. I made a weird rig with coffee cans, duct tape, hangers, and a pen (lol) so I could get the camera to record my perspective. Hopefully this will help beginners. The music in the video is "Ash Koley" My friend Ben introduced me to their music and I immediately loved them. I needed music for the video because I cover so much and there was no way I could talk that fast enough to keep up with the video. If I didn't add music it would be 10 min. of silence. Not very entertaining lol. I really wanted to use their songs so I contacted them and asked permission. Ash replied and told me it was alright. You should check them out. They are really awesome :) Here is a link to the video.
For those of you who already know how to make hats and read a pattern, scroll down. I posted it here. Remember, if you use it please give me credit for the design :)

You are incredibly talented, thank you for sharing. I like your new blog format.
Thanks for sharing the free pattern and winter is almost over (I know it's Spring, but it's been crazy, no?)
Bernadine: Thanks! :)
Deneen: Thanks, yah it has been crazy. School was canceled because of snow today. How crazy is that? lol
April I think you're amazingly talented and you've mentioned before that you want to make a book. I'd be the among the first to buy it if/when you do. Thank you so much for sharing the patterns that you create. I check here everyday to see if you've posted anything new. :)
Just in time!! If I start now, I think I could sneakily just finish it and sneak it into the Impertinent Daughter's Easter basket! Thank you for saving my katooshie!
hi april...i have a question. for rows 15-34, i can't seem to get the count correct. like, row 15 will come up as 80 but then row 16, where 80 should be is actually 79...it makes me wonder if i'm doing a "swirl job"...could you help me figure out what i'm doing wrong? thank you...
btw, i really like your stuff so, i tend to view your blog and etsy accounts often...

never_forget_amy: awww Thanks :)
Jo: Glad to help :)
tatt'd: Sounds to me like you skipped a stitch somewhere. Whenever I skip stitches it is usually the first stitch of the round or the last. Hopefully that will give you a place to start when looking for the lost stitch :)
I kept having to rip out rows too. I was trying to watch This Is Spinal Tap and make the hat at the same time! I finally got it right! I finished the hat and it looks awesome. I wish I knew how to send you a picture. The video was incredibly helpful, and had extra instructions that weren't included on the written pattern (ex. bpdc around the last 2 stitches to keep the pattern even in the brim) This is my first hat, so I'm not sure if that is commonplace knowledge or not, but having the video to help me when I got stuck was awesome! I ordered some patterns from you last night. My son fell in love with the Dragon Whelp and I'm going to attempt it..yikes! Thanks so much April, your stuff is amazing!

thanks for the pattern, april- hope that you are feeling better... it's been quite a while since your last post, and i hope it's not been due to your not feeling well, but b/c of getting busy with crochet designs. btw, congrats on getting some of your patterns listed with annies attic!
Although I'm more of a crocheter I'm gonna try knit this see how it turns out :)
i'm getting ready to attempt this pattern i'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks for the pattern
I can't wait to show my daughter this pattern, she is SO into :-) crochet right now!! and as a tween she has a strong sense of cool. I think this hat will fit the bill. Thanks for posting
My mom requested a slouchy hat and I immediately thought of your patterns. Made this yesterday and it turned out great. I never would have thought to put the rows of SC in between the increasing rows. It worked really well!
Thanks so much for the free pattern :) I really appreciate it.
Just wanted to post an update. I gave this to my mom and she absolutely loved it. Thanks again :)
I cant read the beginning of this pattern. the words are going over each other..
Can u redo this for me> can't read the beginning of the pattern. Thx! and I love ur work, very pretty!
Try viewing it in another viewer. Everything is fine on my end.
You are such an amazing and talented young woman... Ty for sharing all of your glorious creations with us!
Love this, I love all your patterns. your very talented and I appriciate the free patterns cant wait to try this :)
I made this slouch hat tonight. Couldn't find the Bernat Psychedelic on my quick jaunt to the hobby store so I used I Love This Yarn Stripes in Hot Stripe and Red Heart Brt Yellow for the FPDC and BPDC rows. It turned out really cool.
Might me just me but it's a tad loose on my head. But, I have a small head (compacted brain though - lol). I may try 74 or 75 stitches -- whichever helps the band come out even on those alternating PDCs.
Love your patterns and appreciate the ones you share for free. And, the ones you sell are more than reasonably priced.
Thanks,
Tommie Sue
I'm going to be making this to send in a care package.
Thank you for an awesome hat pattern :)

I am doing this in double crochet for an open weave!
Thank you so much for sharing this pattern. I have been coming to your blog for over 5 years now to peek at new creations and get inspiration. I have not been crocheting as long as you have, and I am self taught, but I have been able to complete many projects from your site with relative ease. Even ones I doubted I would be able to accomplish. Thank you again, April!
Hi April, love your patterns, I had a question on your wool weight, do you use 4 ply or worsted weight yarn, I am from New Zealand and maybe our weights are different
thanks
Linda
