Breast Cancer Awareness Slouch Hat

One of my friends on Facebook was making a Breast Cancer Awareness scarf so that sparked the idea to make a hat. Making the chart was a little difficult but I got it down :) It was a bit big to put on a beanie hat so I just made it into a slouch hat. I am not a huge fan of Pink so I made the hat white instead. The cool thing about the ribbon is you can make it any color so you can make a hat for any cause that has a ribbon. What do you think?

Here is a link on How To Read A Chart And Switch Colors

  11. How do you read the chart? i've never used a chart before?..

    ReplyDelete
  12. On Rnd 13 (or next round if you kept going on the last section): 25 sc then start the chart
and it says before that theres 72 alltogther in a round
but on the chart theres 15 across?
i tried reading the link on how to read a chart but im just not getting it

    ReplyDelete
  13. Nathan: The 25 sc gets the pattern centered so it isn't near the back.

sc 25 in the main color then start the pattern

    ReplyDelete
  14. oh okay so then after i sc 25 i do the pattern, and then follow the chart then if what ever is after the chart go on with the main color? and then sc 25 again then follow the chart for the next round?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Nathan: Pretty much :) Except on the next round you don't have to worry about the sc 25 anymore. Just keep following the chart.

  20. I'm new to crocheting and am I suppose to join or not cause I'm on step 12 and it looks like a mat lol. My email is ILovGeeks(at)yahoo(dot)com

    ReplyDelete
  21. Velma: I start the color, work through the design then drop it when I get to the end. That is just how I do it.
    Missy: Thanks
Virginia: Work in the round like you would if you were making a doll

    ReplyDelete
  22. Like Virgina, I too got to round 12 and mine looked like "a matt", I continued on for two more rounds as instructed at the end of round 12 and am now starting to work the chart. Was this right? Will my hat begin to look close to the ones in the pictures?

    ReplyDelete
  23. yes your hat will turn out just fine :) you don't increase anymore after rnd 12 so it will start to form after that :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I am completly in love with this hat. I am making it with a gold ribbon for childhood cancer and donating it to an auction to raise money.. I will let you know how it goes. It's going to be very hard to give this hat upif it comes out the way it looks inthe picture.

    ReplyDelete
  25. could you try it with dc instead of sc? i do sc too tight, so it came out small

    ReplyDelete
  26. I was wondering what brand yarn you use for your hats? I love the way yours came out and I want to try the breast Cancer hat, but I also want to make sure to use the right yarn. For example, there is a big difference between redheart and Caron simply soft, but both are worsted weights.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I made this hat for my sister and it's just awesome. I've begun crocheting to help with my depression and your blog has helped a lot. I want to thank you and tell you you'll be getting a lot of money from me.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thank You so much everyone :)

Krystal: It wouldn't look as good and it would be Waaaaaay long if you did dc instead.

Angel: I usually use regular 4ply worsted weight red heart yarn 100% Acrylic.

IcyO: Thanks! I'm glad I could help :)

  30. I don't see a difference in the hats visually...

  31. I would LOVE to make this hat but I don't understand how to insert the ribbon into the hat. A disabled neighbor taught me how to crochet years ago when I was a child. She taught us alot of stitches but I have just picked it back up and learning how to read patterns and that kind of thing. My mother just completed Chemo and we found out yesterday that she is cancer free. THANK GOD!! Her hair is coming back in slowly and I have made her a couple of hats but I know that she would LOVE this. You should be very proud of your talents and your caring heart.
    joy

    ReplyDelete
  32. The entire hat is done in single crochets (sc). When crocheting the ribbon (chart), the first line you'll crochet 25 single crochets to center your ribbon then begin crocheting the pattern (Line 2 on down you don't have to worry about the 25 single crochets, just follow the chart). Each square is one single crochet. You'll follow it from left to right.

Sorry, April. I hope you don't mind me answering a question on your blog.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Dora07: Thanks for helping. I really appreciate it :D
Joy: What Dora07 said and this might help too http://aprildraven.blogspot.com/2009/11/how-to-switch-colors-and-use-chart.html
Amber: Good I didn't want there to be a visual difference but the second one makes it easier to do the chart. You can just do it without having to worry about increases. The first one you had to do increases and worry about the chart.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Thanks both to Dora07 and April for your answer to my question about the b c ribbon. The web page was very clear. I now understand to keep the colors attached to my project and hold aside until the color is needed again. I am sorry to have to bother you with the question but I couldn't find a clear answer elsewhere on the web. thanks again joy

  37. I love this hat, but I am new to making hats. I watched a video on youtube and made some recently and they turned out very well. Do you do videos at all. Also I really dont understand the chart . I see it says sc 25 but where do you start the pattern and stop...HELP..thanks

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hey Sinblaze,
"On Rnd 13 (or next round if you kept going on the last section): 25 sc then start the chart"
You'll crochet 25 sc (single crochets) then you'll begin crocheting the chart. There is 1 sc per square of the chart. After rnd 13, you don't have to worry about the 25 sc, just continue to crochet the chart. You can start from the bottom of the chart as I believe April did or you can start from the top of the chart. When you're done with the chart, continue to crochet until the end of that row and then continue crocheting as instructed in the directions. I hope this helps.

  40. Dora07: Thank you so much for helping

Kathryn: I made it a slouch hat because the ribbon pattern was so long. I don't think you would be able to make a beanie unless you used a very tiny hook and that would be a completely different pattern.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm new at crocheting, and cant wait to crochet this hat. The chart seems kind of scary, but i want to give it a try any way. This will be a good project to introduce my knit/crochet group.

I'll let you know how it turns out!

  42. I started crocheting when I was in 6th or 7th grade and I'm supposed to be a senior in highschool now. This is such an awesome hat! I live in miami, and I've been looking for patterns that weren't cheesy and old lady-esque and this is definitely it! Thanks so much!:D
I'm just having some trouble with this because I haven't done this in a few years and I'm having a bit of trouble reading the pattern. The stitches aren't quite adding up. They're ending up being too much! It would be great if you made videos for beginners!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I would love to make this hat but the thing is i dont know how to read the chart so I'm just wondering if you have the pattern for this hat without the ribbon? If you do, can you please send it to my email? It's ngan_mai412@yahoo.com

  44. thank you so much for posting this!! i just made this beanie for a friend of mine thats been struggling with an illness & i know it will brighten her day! However, it was my first time making a beanie like this and i have a quick question...is the slouchy park of the beanie kinda tight/structured? or is loose and kinda floppy when you walk? i think i may have made mine a smidge to tight... thanks again for this great pattern!

  45. I crochet tightly so I used a 6.50 mm hook with Red Heart Comfort yarn to get the right gauge. If you need to know how to do intarsia crochet(the pink ribbon on the graph) go to youtube. com and you will find videos on intarsia and how to follow a graph.

  51. how do u get the breast cancer sign on it

    ReplyDelete
  52. Okay this is going to sound like such a stupid question, but when you say to 1 sc, 2 sc in next sc what do you mean by the 1 sc? Like do I sc in a sc or just do it kind of like forming a chain?

    Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  53. that would be 1 sc in the first st, 2 sc in the next st(that increases the width of that round)

  54. answer for kriyah: to do the graph chart see instruction on youtube about intarsia (which is following a graph-like the pink ribbon) here's the link

Can you tell me please ,what is the difference between the first and the second pattern?

  58. April I live your patterns and as a first time crocheter appreciate the ease of them. Quick question, why are the directions for the two fundraising slouch hats different? I go to an ovarian cancer fundraiser every year in honor of my cousin who passed away from the disease and I would love to make a hat and scarf set to put in the silent auction. Just curious about the difference. Thanks. You have an amazing talent and it's awesome that you are willing to share it with the world!!!

  60. Being a Breast Cancer Survivor and new to crocheting I fell un live with this slouchy hat. Thank you is much for creating the pattern and posting it for all of us. I'm hoping that mine comes out so that I can share with others. While going through chemo I was given a special crocheted hat to keep my bare head warm and would love to do the same thing for others. When I was given my hat it made me feel special so I know this hat will do the same thing to other people. My next visit to my Oncologist is next month so hopefully I'll have at least one done to being to his office. Thanks again you have created some very special to many of us.

I DID THE 25sc now where do I start on the chart do I go from first row left to right , or first square down and around (hope im not confusing lol)? When starting the chart where do I start from top bottom where? I would love to fnish for my aunt she has breast cancer and always wanted one of these hats =/

    ReplyDelete
  63. sorry, i didn't make that clear. after you crochet the 25 sc before the first line of the chart, you don't have to worry about making the 25 sc anymore. you simply sc until you come back around to where your ribbon is and follow the next line of the chart.

  69. I tried to read all the comments so I wasn't asking a question that's already been answered, but when doing the chart, did you start from the bottom of the chart? You tutorial link said to turn the chart upside down when doing a hat but I don't understand how that will get the ribbon right side up... Do you start from the bottom since it's a slouch hat? Lol. I hope that makes sense.

  79. HOW I GOT CURED OF HERPES DISEASE
I'm here to testify about what DR. OSO did for me. I have been suffering from (HERPES) disease for the past 5 years and had constant pain, especially inside my body. During the first year,I had faith in God that I would be healed someday. This disease started circulating all over my body and I have been taking treatment from my doctor, few weeks ago I came across a testimony of one lady on the internet testifying about a Man called DR. OSO on how he cured her from herpes disease. And she also gave the email address of this man and advised anybody to contact him for help for any kind of sickness that he would be of help.so I emailed him telling him about my (HERPES) he told me not to worry that i was going to be cured!! Well I never believed it,, well after all the procedures and remedies given to me by this man few weeks later i started experiencing changes all over me as DR. OSO assured me that I will be cured, after some time. I went to my doctor to confirm if I had finally healed Behold, it was TRUE,the test came out negative. So friends my advice is if you have such sickness or any other at all you can contact DR. OSO for help.

  83. Thank you so much for posting this pattern on Pinterest, It is very easy to read and to crochet for the completion. I am making this for my niece who is still suffering with breast cancer. She has had a double mastectomy and it's now moved into her brain. With all treatments she's done, the steroids made her swell and something else has made it to where she cannot do much for herself or walk. She needs to use a wheelchair now. Please anyone out there pray for all suffering from any kind of cancer 🙏🤟❣
