Free Convertible Hat Pattern

I wanted to make a cool hat pattern so my mother in law could make hats. She can only make simple things. I came up with this. It is basically just a tube cinched on top. If you make this please post a link to pics :D I would love to see what people come up with.

Convertible Hat
By: AprilDraven
for personal use only
Please don't sell this pattern.

Gauge: 4 inches = 13 stitches and 14 rows
My head size is 22 and a half inches around so adjust your hook size accordingly. Remember yarn stretches a little bit so this hat will fit inches bigger too.

Yarn: regular 4 ply worsted yarn

Hat measures about 10 inches from top to bottom so if you want to try it in hdc or dc those are the measurements :)

abbreviation meanings:
sc: single crochet
dc: double crochet
fp: Front post
bp: back post
ss: slip stitch
sk: skip
FO: Fasten Off

H/8-5.00MM hook
12 sc= 4 inches
100% Acrylic yarn (the cheap stuff LOL)

with black ch 75 join to first ch with a ss to form a circle (or chain enough to go around your head), ch 1

sc in each ch around, join with a ss to top of first sc, ch 2

*1dcfp, 1dcbp* repeat from * to * around, join with a ss to top of first dc, ch 2 (5 rounds) (on the end of the 5th round ch 1 instead of chaining 2)

switch to pink

sc in each dc around, join with a ss to top of first sc, ch 1

sc in each sc around, join with a ss to top of first sc

switch to black

ch 1, sc in each sc, join with a ss to top of first sc, ch 1

repeat with 2 rows of each color until there is 7 stripes of pink and 7 stripes of black

on the last round

ch 2, skip 1, *sc 2, ch 1, sk 1, sc 2* continue from * to * around join with a ss. FO.

for the top tie ch 140 FO and weave around the top holes and cinch shut and tie a bow. add beads to the end ties and you are done :D

*NOTE* If you are making the hat just one color instead of chaining and joining with a ss at the end of every round you can get a marker and make it in rounds so you don't get a seam line.

You can wear the hat as a slouchy hat, Pull your hair through the hole in the top, fold up the brim, or wear it as a scarf.

  1. Hi! I'm relatively new at crocheting (haven't done anything in more than 20 years), and I love hats. I'm presently working on a second beret (two daughters), and I'm planning to try your convertible hat, but I don't understand what front post and back post mean. Could you explain? thank you very much! ^_^

I love hearing about people using my patterns for charity. I live in a small town so I don't really get to do charity work. Good luck making the hats. It is a very kind thing you are doing.

  8. awesome pattern! thanks so much for making it free, as requested here's a pic of mine!

very easy to make, but to make it faster, i think you could easily substitute the stripes of single crochet into a stripe of half double crochets...

    ReplyDelete
  9. Thanks for showing me a pic :D I love the colors you used. You could even use double crochet if you wanted it to be really fast. I tend to use single crochet a lot because it is tighter and warmer for the horrid winters we get here.

  10. Hi April! I really like this pattern, and am attempting it using only double crochet. Question: how long is it from crown to edge? I am not sure how long to make it. Thanks!

I love being able to put my ponytail through it and still wear the hat!! I made one to match a little scarf I'd already made myself, and a friend of mine loved it so much, she wanted one, too, so I made her a black one. Everybody thinks they're adorable!! Thanks so much.

  24. I'm working on one of these now. I hope I have enough yarn to finish or it'll be a 2 tone hat instead of a single color lol.
Everyone's FP & BP crochets look so much better than mine and it looks like you all did more rounds of them than I did I think.
I'll post pics when mines done :)

  29. I just want to thank you for making patterns that turn out hats big enough for my BIG head. I usually end up with hats that are either too small or they are so tight they give me a headache. Your hats are stylish and comfy! (without me having to alter the pattern or hook size) :) Thanks for sharing. I made one of tehse yesterday while stuck inside during a typhoon. It was going to be a gift, but I really wanna keep it!!Thanks!!!

  35. Hi April, I love you patterns you are so creative. I'm trying to make this hat but for some reason it looks like I'm creating more stitches or less. Can you please clarity this for me. Each roll starts with a ch1 so that's loop #1 then sc on each sc all around. Then ss to the loop #1?? After ss to loop #1 there's already a loop on the needle so do I just ch1 again to start another roll? Sorry I'm a total beginner and directions from youtube are each slightly different. :\

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thanks Everyone :)

    phillygrl:I'm sorry I don't understand your question.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Sorry April, even I'm a bit confused.

ch 1, sc in each sc, join with a ss to top of first sc, ch 1 (your directions)

ch 1 (makes 1 loop), sc in each sc (say I made 10), join with a ss to top of first sc (so we skip over the ch 1)

Hope that makes a bit more sense. I don't know how to post pictures so I can't show you how it looks. But the place where you change color seems to be heading towards the right side like it's twisting (inside view).

  38. Hi April, I was finally able to figure out how to use this program :) This is how it looks like.

  39. Ok it looks like you either lost a few stitches or started crocheting tighter once you got going. That is the only thing I can think of. You might want to try counting your stitches after each round so you are sure you aren't dropping any stitches. If it still turns out that way then that means it is your tension. A lot of people who are learning have that problem. Good Luck!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Thanks April, but I'll leave this one along for now lol. I might as well start a new one and start counting.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Love your patterns. Very easy to understand. I'm a beginner at crochet. Currently working on this convertible hat. I'm using a single color though. You have a lot of great work : ) Keep it up : )

  47. I recently made three of these hats and absolutely adore them I'm going to be making many more to gift out at Christmas. I love double crochet so I've modified your pattern slightly in order to make these hats. I love your patterns, you are so creative!!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm a wee bit confused on the last row

    *sc 2, ch 1, sk 1, sc 2
Is that sc2 in the next stitch or sc in the next 2 stitches,
chain one skip one I get that part

then sc2 (same question as before), then another sc2?

  49. As my daughter said, "This hat is Awesome!". I supposed I'll be making several of these for her and her friends. I love the pattern. Thanks so much for sharing.

  50. Just found your hat pattern as I'm new to crochet free patterns. I'm looking forward making several to donate to our local food pantry. Here in New England the winters are long and cold. It looks perfect for adapting to any hair style.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I made it, but started with a "chainless foundation," sometimes known as a "foundation single crochet." It is a way of making the chain and next row of stitches (Could be half-double, double, treble, et cetera, instead of single.) at the same time. It is easier to decide how many stitches to start with, because the the stitches don't have to be pulled out in order to shorten or lengthen the starting chain. It is stretcher than a normal chain, too. Lots of instructions & video can be found with Google.
One thing to note is that though it is easy to join the crochet stitches into a circle with a slip stitch, there will be a gap in the chain until you use the little starting tail of the beginning slip stitch to close it.

  54. Hi April...love love love these patterns! I made the Mario "star" hat for my son and he's thrilled with it...his fav colour is orange so I used your pattern exactly. I've also used the regular convertible hat pattern several times to give away as gifts...ironically since finding your fabulous pattern we are moving to Georgia and probably won't have need for these handy hats :-( Great gifts for all our friends we're leaving behind in Canada though! Thanks again!

  55. Hello there! My husband is making this for me. I have to ask... is it warm even though it doesn't have an enclosed 'end'? Does it keep the warmth in when it's closed up? Does it really work as a scarf?

  56. This was my second project to finish. My daughter loves it!

  57. I am a single mom with two kids and looking for ways to use my crochet skills to make some money. I was wondering if I give you credit, would you mind if i made some hats with this pattern and sold them?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Funny thing, I was thinking about this the other day, while running errands.I was cold and really wished I could find some yarn and make myself a hat (I couldn't sell, don't have the time or the skills needed).

Maybe it would be fairer if along with every order something more than just cred would go to April. For example, if someone who did the Etsy hats for cash would buy the pattern every time (or every other time) they had an order, it would actually help both.

Not sure how that would work for the free ones, if they were sold offline. Small PayPal donation for each sold hat (say $1), payable every 10-20 hats?

    Just throwing it out there.

Did I say I love this pattern! Thanks for making it free. I will check out your shop and see if I can help support you.

  61. Thanks so very much for creating and sharing this great tut! I have waist length hair and live in Colorado so every year I have to figure out how I can shove all my hair in and make it still look 'right'.

I made this about 3 days after I found it (last December) and have been delighted with both the ease of making it and how great it looks! When we get blizzardy weather there is plenty of room to tuck all my hair in and still look 'stylin'. When it's just a bit cold, I love wearing it with either a pony tail or just my unbound hair coming out the hole. This is a dream come true for long-haired lassies. ;-)

I used a Red Heart Super Saver in an Aspen Print and don't love that so much, plus I realized with my very long hair, I need to extend the top a bit more. I am making another one or two for this winter but think I'll do the stripes...I really like the looks of yours.

    Thanks again April!! Kudos!!

  62. In the first 5 rounds you ch 2 and go around front and back posts but it says when you get to end to SS in top of first SC. Do you mean in top of CH 2 or top of 1st SC?

    ReplyDelete
  63. @Robyn Whitney, only the first round is single crochets, you slip stitch in the top of the first of single crochet to join the round. The next 5 rounds are fpdc and bpdc. You chain 2 and then fpdc in the first stitch (the stitch below it). When finishing the round, you ignore the ch2 and slip stitch to the top of the fpdc.

Thanks for the pattern, it's really simple. I had some left over yarn in really bright colors from a kid blanket I made, perfect for sports teams. I changed the striping and made some hats in team colors for my family and myself.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I am brand new to crocheting and I just complete my second of these hats!! I love them. The first I adapted and ended up just single crocheting the bottom and double crocheted the rest. I couldn't figure out the fpdc, bpdc. Using black first time out is not wise.. lol. Second one I messed up a few things too, but I got the posts and I LOVE IT!! I can't believe I actually made it!! Thanks so much for sharing your patterns with us!!
